Adult students

Can you get a diploma after 21?

A lot of people are told that once they pass 21, school is finished for them. That is not a rule anywhere that matters.

What actually stops at 21

What ends at a certain age is not the possibility of a diploma — it is eligibility for a particular programme. Public school systems serve students up to a set age, usually somewhere between 18 and 21 depending on the state. Once you are past that, the local high school is no longer the route.

That is a limit on one route, not on the credential. A private school can enrol an adult. That is the entire reason adult diploma programmes exist, and it is a normal thing to do rather than an exception someone has to make for you.

Why the age question comes up at all

Usually because of what the person has already been told, and because of one practical thing: adult learners often need a route that does not require attending during working hours. Both are solved by an online programme.

It is also worth naming the other reason people ask — whether it is embarrassing. It is not, and nobody is told. The work is done from home and the only thing that changes is what you can answer when you are asked.

What the options look like after 21

There are two routes that matter, and they are the same two regardless of your age:

  • A high school equivalency credential — an assessment, and a certificate of equivalency.
  • A diploma programme — a school enrols you, you complete its programme, and the school awards the diploma with credits and a transcript behind it.

How the Autumn Grove programme works

A student completes the high school programme across eight subject areas for a total of 24 credits, and sits the school examination. The examination is taken online, from home, in a single session. On passing, the school awards a high school diploma carrying the full 24 credits.

The examination can be retaken as many times as needed, without additional charge. Records and transcripts are issued by the school office, and each diploma is numbered and registered.

Common questions

Is there an age limit?

No. There is no upper age limit on the programme or the examination.

I am in my fifties. Is that too late?

No. Adults of every age complete the programme. The work is done from home at your own pace.

Will anyone be told?

No. The programme and examination are completed privately from home.
