Choosing a route
Diploma or GED: what is the difference?
Both routes exist and both have their place. The difference is what the document says about you, and who is willing to accept it.
One is a certificate. The other is a diploma.
A GED is a certificate of high school equivalency. It says you demonstrated the knowledge. It is issued by a testing service, and it is not a diploma — the name matters, because employers and institutions read the name.
A high school diploma is awarded by a school. It says a school considers you to have completed its program, and it is issued by that school, from that school's records.
Where the difference shows up
In daily life the two are often treated the same. It is at the edges that they separate:
- Some employers accept a GED without comment; others list "high school diploma" as a requirement and mean it literally.
- College admissions generally accept both, but the record behind a diploma — courses, credits, a transcript — is more useful when a college wants detail.
- Licensing boards and the military vary. Some want a diploma specifically, and some accept equivalency.
- If you later need a transcript, a school can produce one. A testing service produces a score report.
Which route suits which person
The GED suits someone who wants to demonstrate knowledge quickly and does not need school records. It is well established, widely recognised, and it is the right answer for many people.
A diploma program suits someone who wants the document to say "diploma", who needs a transcript, or who wants the 24-credit record behind it. It also suits students whose circumstances — a move, an illness, a late start — mean they never accumulated the credits a conventional school would require.
Both are better than neither
It is worth saying plainly: the worst outcome is not choosing the "wrong" one, it is choosing neither. Most jobs and most colleges accept either document, and the difference between having one and having none is far larger than the difference between the two.
Common questions
Is a GED the same as a diploma?
No. A GED is a certificate of equivalency issued by a testing service. A diploma is awarded by a school.
Will colleges accept a diploma from an online program?
Colleges generally accept diplomas from accredited programs. Ask the specific college, and ask what they want alongside it.
