Work and requirements
Do you need a high school diploma to get a job?
It is one of the most common lines in a job posting, and one of the least examined. What it means depends entirely on the employer.
When the requirement is real
For some roles the requirement is solid, and no amount of experience replaces it. Licensed trades, roles that involve regulated safety duties, the military, and some government positions are the usual examples. If a licence or a clearance depends on the credential, the credential is genuinely required.
Colleges and universities are similar. A diploma or equivalent is normally a hard requirement for admission, regardless of what you know.
When it is a filter rather than a requirement
For many private employers, the line in the posting is inherited boilerplate. Nobody checks it for most roles, or it is applied loosely when the candidate is otherwise strong.
The trouble is that you cannot tell which kind of employer you are looking at from the posting, and you will usually never get the chance to explain. An application that does not clear the filter is never read.
What actually changes when you have one
Not the job you can do — the application you are allowed to make. Having the credential means the question stops being a reason to set your paperwork aside, which is the whole of it.
It also matters for the positions that come later. Some employers promote into roles that then require it, and a few will pay for further training only once the basic requirement is met.
If you do not have one
Two things are worth doing, and they can be done at the same time. Apply anyway where the posting is loose — experience often outweighs the line for the roles that actually interview. And start on the credential, because it is the part that keeps working no matter where you apply.
Common questions
Will an employer check?
It varies. Some verify, some do not. Some only verify for particular roles. You cannot know in advance, which is why the document is worth having.
Can I get a job without one?
Often, yes — especially where experience is strong. But the filter removes some applications before anyone reads them.
